My story of Immigration to Canada: A Journey That Led to Helping Others

Immigration is not just my profession—it’s a deeply personal journey that shaped my life and career. Though my own experience can be different from recent newcomers, I understand the challenges, uncertainties, and hopes that come with starting over in a new country.

My immigration story began when I moved to Canada from South Korea with my parents and younger brother in 2000. At the time, I was in my early teens and didn’t fully grasp the complexity of what my parents had undertaken—navigating the immigration process, gathering documents, and making decisions that would impact our future. What I did understand, however, was that they were taking this leap for the sake of a better life, not just for themselves but for us, their children.

Adapting to a New Life

When we arrived, we stayed with relatives in Vancouver, BC, while my parents sought work and figured out the practicalities of our new life—housing, jobs, schools, and legal paperwork. I remember my first day of high school, where my father didn’t have an English translation of my school enrollment letter. Even simple administrative tasks were daunting due to language barriers and unfamiliar systems.

Despite these initial struggles, I was fortunate to have the support of my family. I quickly adapted, made friends with other immigrant students, and eventually pursued higher education at University of Toronto, where I studied Political Science and English. This academic background would later help me develop key skills—critical thinking, writing, and an understanding of political and social systems—that led me to my current profession.

Why I Chose to Help Others Navigate Immigration

Looking back, I now see how much effort my parents put into making our immigration successful. Many aspiring immigrants are handling the entire immigration process on their own. They may be applying for work permits, permanent residency, or citizenship without family support, often facing complex paperwork and ever-changing regulations. Having gone through the experience as a child and later studying the legal and policy side of immigration, I wanted to dedicate my career to making the process easier for others.

Immigration to Canada transformed my life and gave me opportunities I never imagined. Today, I help others experience the same possibilities. Whether you’re moving for a better career, education, or to reunite with family, I understand the journey’s challenges and rewards—and I’m here to guide you through it.
